When I am designing a jewellery commission or remodelling for a client the first stage is either a FaceTime/Zoom or in person chat, either in my jewellery studio in Herefordshire or when I meet clients in London to chat about a commission. I then follow up with quotes and some sketches or mock up images.
I have to say I’m not a wonderful 'sketcher'. I prefer to design jewellery with the metal and stones; making models in paper and silver to test ideas. However, I have to sketch to convey ideas for clients. Other jewellery makers may use technology to help with this, but I still prefer the 'old school' approach!
I thought I would share some of my commission/remodelling sketches and the final pieces just so you can see how close they are. If you would like to discuss commissioning or remodelling jewellery with me feel free to get in touch.

I had the pleasure of reworking Hannas' much loved wedding and engagement ring into a new design, after much discussion I came up with multi lined band based on a combination of my designs.
OH MY GOD SUE!!! I love it so much! - Hanna

If I am working with clients own precious stones and/or their metal, often the sketches are done before I see the stones in person - working from images the client has emailed to me. I have become very good at guessing dimensions from client image, as with this stacking ring set for Jacqui.
They just arrived and they look so beautiful! Thank you for creating something so special, I love them and my Mum would most definitely have approved! - Jacqui

When my client Lindsay asked me to work with her emerald and diamonds, I did several sketches. This is the one that she decided upon.
It is very lovely indeed and I can't wait to wear it. Thank you so much - Lyndsay

If I am sourcing stones for a client, often it is easier to visualise things when you can see a mock up of the design. In this case Judy was deciding between three different sapphires and two different designs. Design one was a simple one band design, and the second was a two band design with a splayed open top. This was the mock up image I did which helped her decide upon the blue sapphire and one band. In fact she went a little further and we added diamonds into the band too.

Sometimes, as in the case of Liz and Georgia, they knew what stones they wanted for their rings, but even then there is such variation with in the colour tones. A film in the best way to illustrate the various, as I did here.
